The Characteristics of Marble Countertops
Marble has been sought after by kitchen connoisseurs for many years for its sheer beauty and aesthetic value. However, before purchasing marble, it is wise to fully research the pros and cons and advantages and disadvantages of marble countertops, while also comparing this choice to other popular materials, such as granite, corian, slate, concrete and stainless steel.
The Pros of Marble Countertops
One of the best characteristics of marble aside from its beauty is that marble is one of the hardest natural substances found on earth, and comes with a life-time guarantee if it is well looked after. Another of marble’s biggest advantages is the variety of colors, patterns and shades it is available in. The characteristic veining of marble is a major benefit, because this feature provides an elegant and refined look to any kitchen, of any style and color scheme.
Another pro for marble is that it is largely heat resistant, although intense, direct heat can damage marble. One of the most attractive advantages of marble countertops is the glossy and shiny contrast they bring to wood and tiles in the kitchen space. An additional benefit of marble is that it is largely resistant to cracks, scratches and burns.
The Cons of Marble Countertops
Once of the significant disadvantages of marble is that it is porous. The con here is that marble can be easily stained. One small scratch can allow liquids to seep in under the seal coating and permanently stain the marble. Another drawback of marble is that if you burn a section it cannot be fixed and you will need to replace the entire countertop. The big disadvantage of marble in that case is that older pieces may be difficult to match up with the same veining .
An additional con of marble is the price; marble countertops can be quite expensive, considered by many to be one of the biggest disadvantages to having them installed. The cost of marble is better justified If you are planning on investing in your kitchen for the long term and do not intend moving out of the home or having new countertops installed in the near future.
Care and Maintenance of Marble Countertops
Always use a soft cloth whether wiping the surface of your marble countertops, dry or wet. Do not use abrasive chemicals on the marble and make sure you use a detergent that is safe to use with stone. To be sure, check products with your installer. To protect and get your desired life span from marble, you should always ensure you use trivets, coasters and cutting boards, so as not to damage the surface.
Now you are ready to purchase marble for your kitchen.......
